Derrick Obasohan re-joined the UTA men’s basketball program in 2023-24 as a graduate assistant after previously spending the 2019-20 season with the Mavericks in a similar role. He was elevated to an assistant coach role ahead of the 2024-25 season and is in his second season as an assistant under head coach KT Turner.
A former UTA standout, professional player and Olympian, Obasohan scored 1,308 career points for the Mavs from 2000-04 – which still ranks as the 8th-most in program history. Obasohan played 14 years professionally in France, Spain and Turkey.
Obasohan was the starting shooting guard for Nigeria at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He averaged 10.6 points and 3.2 rebounds over five contests, including a personal high of 18 points in the final Group A Preliminary Round matchup against France.
He also represented Nigeria at the 2006 FIBA World Championship (now known as the Basketball World Cup) in Japan, and won a bronze medal at the 2011 FIBA Africa Championship.
In 2001, Obasohan became first men’s basketball player in UTA history to be named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He also garnered Southland Conference honors as a junior and senior.
As a senior in 2003-04, Obasohan helped guide UTA to its first-ever conference championship as the Mavs won the Southland Regular Season Title with an 11-5 record.
Obasohan graduated from UTA with a degree in Communications Technology in 2004.
