FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU junior Marcus Shropshire came off the bench to score 13 of his team-high 14 points in the first half to ignite the Horned Frogs to an 87-598 win over Texas-Arlington in the season opener for both teams at Daniel Meyer Coliseum Saturday.
TCU (1-0) shot 54.8% from the field (17 of 31) in the opening half and converted 14 UTA turnovers into 14 points as the Horned Frogs jumped out to an early lead and never trailed. UTA could muster just three field goals in the first 9:00 of the game as TCU built a 22-9 lead after a 3-point by Shropshire with 11:08 to play in the first half.
UTA rallied behind an 11-5 run over the next 5:57 to cut the lead to 24-18 after a rare five-point play. Chris Hairfield (League City, Texas) knocked down a 3-pointer and Steven Thomas (Fort Worth, Texas) was fouled under the basket by Marcus Sloan. Thomas converted both free throws to make it 24:18 with 7:49 to play. But UTA could not finish the half as TCU ended the period on a 15-4 run. UTA committed 14 of their 24 turnovers in the first half. The TCU bench accounted for 26 of the Frogs' 44 first-half points.
UTA (0-1) was led in scoring by Thomas and senior forward Derrick Obasohan (Houston, Texas) with 16 points each.
TCU had four players in double figures. Joining Shropshire, a transfer from Texas Tech, for team-high honors was reserve forward Chudi Chinweze with 14 as the TCU bench accounted for 49 of the 87 points . Guards Corey Santee and Corey Valsin added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Mavericks battled TCU on even terms in the first 15:00 of the second half, but TCU ended the game on 16-4 run over the final 6:23. UTA made 26 of 30 (86.7%) free throws for the game.
