ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington sophomore forward Steven Thomas scored a career-high 24 points and senior forward Derrick Obasohan canned four 3-pointers as part of his 21 points to lift the Mavericks past Texas Wesleyan 74-69 at Texas Hall Wednesday night.
The win was the 10th straight in the series by UTA (2-2) over Texas Wesleyan, now 4-5.
Senior guard Keith Howell added 10 points for UTA. Thomas set a career best for the second straight game after pouring in 23 at Texas-Pan American on Nov. 29. He has scored double figures in all four games this season.
Texas Wesleyan was led by Joey Gladney with 19 points. Brad Schilder had 14 and Wesley Haynes added nine.
The Rams overcame a four-point halftime deficit to take a 45-42 lead before UTA got a 3-point play from Thomas to tie the game at 45-45 with 14:20 to play. The Mavericks scored six straight points to break a 49-49 tie with a layup by Kenneth Henderson, another fastbreak layup by Obasohan and an Obasohan bucket in the paint for a 57-49 lead with 11:10 to play.
UTA held Texas Wesleyan to one field goal in the opening 4:57 of the game to take an 8-2 lead. Texas Wesleyan rallied to trim the lead to 13-11 after a Brad Schilder layup, but UTA hit three consecutive 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 22-17 after an Obasohan jumper with 8:01 to play in the first half.
TWU went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 22-22 after a jumper by Joey Gladney with 6:15 to play.
UTA got in foul trouble in the first half. Senior center Roy Johnson sat five minutes of the half with two fouls. Obasohan had three fouls 12 minutes into the game, but stayed on the court and scored eight of his 11 first-half points after his third foul.
UTA return to Texas Hall Friday to host winless Texas-Permian Basin (0-9). Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live on UTA Radio (Comcast Channel 98-Arlington).
