UTA Scores in Each of the First Six Innings
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO...The University of Texas at Arlington continued to swing hot bats as they scored early and often in a 14-7 rout of Northwestern in the final game of the DKD Electric Shootout at Lobo Field.
The Mavericks (10-11) got on the scoreboard as with one out, Chris Taylor reached when the Wildcat shortstop dropped a pop up behind second base. Ryan Roberts followed with a single to center field and Daniel Lenihan plated both runners with a double to left center field. Hunter Pence singled to center field and Darrell Preston plated the third run of the inning with a single to left center field.
The Wildcats (6-5) got a run back in the home half of the first inning as leadoff double came around to score on infield single to shortstop.
UTA pushed its lead back to three runs in the second inning as Taylor hit his second home run of the season over the left field wall for a solo shot.
The Maverick bats continued to stay hot in the third inning as the Mavericks plated six runs in the inning on four hits and were helped by two Wildcat errors. Dustin Bozarth got the scoring going with a two RBI single to left field. Taylor followed two batters later with an RBI double down the right field line and Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Lenihan plated the last run of the inning with a single through the right side.
The offensive onslot continued in the fourth inning as Preston and Deevers drew walks to start the inning. Scott Williams advanced both runners with a fly out to right field. Bozarth followed with a single up the middle to score both runners to make the score 12-1.
UTA added another run in the fifth inning as Pence doubled to right center to score Taylor who had singled earlier in the inning.
NU got three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on one hit. They were helped out by three UTA walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches.
UTA got a run back in the sixth inning as Deevers led off the inning with a triple to center field and scored on a Williams bloop single to right center field.
Pierce Loveless (1-1) picked up the victory by pitching 3.2 innings of relief allowing one run on four hits while striking out five. Dan Pohlman took the loss as he gave up 10 runs, four earned, on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.
Taylor and Pence led the offense with three hits apiece. Bozarth added two hits and four RBI.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, March 14, as it opens up Southland Conference play with a three game series at Northwestern State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rocky Miller Park in Nacitoches, La.
