MAVERICKS ROUT RAMS 13-2

May 6, 2003

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington closed out its 2003 home season as it thumped the Texas Wesleyan Rams 13-2 Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (30-19) cracked the scoreboard in the second inning as Hunter Pence started things with a triple into the right center field gap. Darrell Preston plated Pence with a swinging bunt to the left side of the infield. Scott Williams continued the rally with a single to right field. After an Aaron Batlle sacrifice bunt, Robby Deevers fouled off a plethora of pitches before delivering a two-run single into left center field.

UTA padded its lead in the third inning via the big fly as with one out Ryan Roberts hit a line drive over the right field fence for his 14th homerun of the season, after flying out to the wall in left field in his first at-bat. Pence followed with a base-on-balls and Scott Williams hit his fourth homer of the season over the right center field wall.

The game was broken open in the fifth inning as UTA plated five more runs on four hits and were helped out by one Ram error. Roberts got the rally started with a leadoff walk and went to second on a Pence single through the right side. Preston walked to load the bases and Williams delivered a two-run double to right field. Aaron Batlle produced a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Preston and advancing Williams to third. Robby Deevers reached on an error by the TWU pitcher, allowing Williams to score from third. Dustin Bozarth followed with a single to right field, and with two outs, Chris Taylor doubled to right center field scoring Bozarth.

After the Mavs made a complete "line change" in the top of the sixth inning, the UTA bats kept on producing runs. Jonathan Bosnick got the inning started with a bloop single into left field. Dan Dody followed with a double off the right field wall moving Bosnick to third. Paul Bruder scored Bosnick with a groundout to shortstop.

The Rams got on the board in the seventh inning as Nathan Murrell collected a one out single to right field. Murrell proceeded to steal second base and score on a Cole Henry single to left field. Henry would advance to second as Bosnick's throw bounced over catcher Spencer Dean. Henry advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Billy Eaton single to right field.

UTA closed out the scoring in the eighth inning as Daniel Lenihan beat out an infield single to first base. Bosnick followed with a single through the left side and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Bruder plated Lenihan with his second RBI groundout to shortstop.

Michael Gardner (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory by pitching two innings without allowing a hit. Andy Hughes took the loss by allowing three runs on four hits in two innings of work. Mike Snapp made an appearance in the fourth inning to tie David Sobczak for the all-time appearnce list with 86 appearances.

Williams led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a home run and four runs batted in. Pence and Bosnick also collected two hits for the Mavs.

The Mavericks return to Southland Conference action on Friday, May 9, as they travel to Huntsville for a three-game set with Sam Houston State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
