LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The University of Texas at Arlington sophomore guard Terra Wallace scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lady Mavs to a 76-59 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock in the season opener. The victory was the second straight season opening victory for UTA.
With the Lady Mavs (1-0) trailing by three, Wallace scored 14 points in sparking a 27-7 run over the final 10:22 of the half. Wallace started the run with a three-pointer and a short jumper. After UALR tied the game up, Wallace gave the Lady Mavs the lead for good with a triple and Tamesha Graves scored off a quick turnover. UTA would get a pair of buckets from Rola Ogunoye and another by Ashley Bobb to take a 27-15 lead with 6:10 to play. Wallace closed out the first half with a short jumper from the left baseline as time expired to give UTA a 37-20 advantage at intermission.
The Trojans (0-1) came out offensive in the second half and were able to trim the Lady Mavs lead to 51-43 just over five minutes into the second half. A three-pointer by Krystal Buchanan and a bucket by Ogunoye would quickly push the lead back to 13 points.
UALR would cut the lead to nine points before the Lady Mavs would regain control of the game and push its lead all the way to 18 points behind nine points from Buchanan, including a big three-pointer as the shot clock was expiring.
UTA finished the game by going 30-for-59 (.508) from the floor and 8-for-21 (.381) from behind the arc. The Lady Mavs were also 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
Ogunoye and Buchanan were also in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Brown and Jocelyn Love each had 16 points for the Trojans.
The Lady Mavs return to action Sunday afternoon, Nov. 21, as they take on Kansas. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse.
