ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington used a 25-5 run midway through the second half to overcome a 13-point deficit and defeat Stephen F. Austin 71-67 in a Southland Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
UTA (11-11, 6-5) won for the ninth time in 10 games at Texas Hall while Stephen F. Austin (15-6, 6-4) dropped its sixth straight road game.
Senior forward Derrick Obasohan scored a game-high 20 points. Reserve Steven Thomas came off the bench to score 14 and Keith Howell added 13. Stephen F. Austin was led by Marcus Clark's 16 and 11 from Antonio Burks.
SFA led 48-35 after a 3-pointer by Burks with 13:22 to play in the game. But the Mavericks roared back over the next 5:40. Three 3-pointers by Obasohan, Donny Beacham and Brady Dawkins trimmed the lead to 48-44 with 11:31 to play. UTA took its first lead of the game at 52-51 on a 3-pointer by Stephen Floyd with 9:38 left.
UTA took the lead, 54-53, for good on a pair of Keith Howell free throws with 7:53 left. The lead swelled to eight, 67-59, on a pair of Thomas free throws with 3:45 to go.
"It was a great effort by our guys today," said UTA head coach Eddie McCarter. "We came in a little tired after playing on the road Thursday, but we gave it all we had and it was just enough today."
The Mavericks bench outscored, SFA 28-17, and UTA outrebounded the Lumberjacks, 37-26.
UTA returns to action Wednesday when they play at Texas-San Antonio at 8 p.m.
