DENTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington used an extra frame to edge past New Mexico, 2-1, Friday afternoon at the North Texas / Beltin Round-Up. The Lady Mavericks improved their season record to 3-6-1 with the win.
UTA struck first plating an unearned run in the top of the third after April Jones doubled to left and scored on an error by the Lobos shortstop.
New Mexico answered in the bottom of the frame on Cassie Chavez's RBI single up the middle tied the game at one run apiece.
The squads remained deadlocked through the final four innings before beginning the international tiebreaker in the top of the eighth. With Falon Kwasnick starting on second base for UTA, freshman Amanda Haney sacrificed her to second before Jenna Fortune smacked a single to center to plate the winning run.
Jill Garro (3-2) tossed the complete 8.0 innings, scattering four hits and striking out six. UTA's offense continued to struggle as the Lady Mavericks managed only four hits in the contest, only one more than the previous game.
UTA will return to action when it faces Oklahoma State at 10 a.m. in day two action at the North Texas / Beltin Round-Up in Denton.
