MAVERICKS DROP 3-2 PITCHER'S DUAL TO DALLAS BAPTIST

Feb. 27, 2004

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington starter Grant Varnell and Dallas Baptist starter Jeff Gilmore went pitch-for-pitch at Clay Gould Ballpark with both pitchers throwing complete games in the Patriots 3-2 victory.

Varnell (1-2) was the tough luck loser as he allowed three runs, two earned on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Gilmore (3-1) picked up the win by allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

DBU (8-4) took advantage of mistakes made in the field by the Mavericks as they capitalized on two errors to push a run across in the second inning. The first two batters of the inning reached on a base hit and a hit by pitch before a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. UTA catcher Dane Ryan was then called for catcher's interference to load the bases. Sean Burgess drove in the run with a fielder's choice to second base.

UTA (4-5) pushed its first run across the board in the fourth inning as Darrell Preston ripped a run producing double down the right field line for the team's first hit of the game. The hit scored Hunter Pence who reached on a throwing error one at-bat prior.

The Patriots regained the lead in the sixth inning as after the leadoff hitter reached on an error, Drew Holder doubled to right field to put runners on the corners with nobody out. A Ben Zobrist sacrifice fly to center field scored the first run and the second came in on a wild pitch.

The Mavs got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Aaron Batlle led off with a double to straight away center field and was balked over to third. Pence drove in the run with a one-out single into the hole at shortstop.

The same two teams will close out their three-game set tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. matinee at Clay Gould Ballpark.
