UTA'S PECIULIONYTE NAMED SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Feb. 4, 2004

ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington freshman Monika Peciulionyte was named the Southland Conference women's tennis player of the week, the league office announced today.

Peciulionyte, ranked No. 46 in the ITA singles poll, recorded a 4-6, 6-3, (10-5) upset victory over No. 10 Julie Smekodub at the No. 1 position in the Lady Mavericks 6-1 loss at Tulane. Peciulionyte, already the highest ranked singles player in UTA women's tennis history, continues to break into the UTA record books as she is now the first women's tennis player to defeat an opponent ranked in the top ten nationally.

Texas-Arlington will travel to Houston to face the Cougars on Friday at 2 p.m., before matching up against Alabama-Birmingham the following day at 11 a.m.
