ARLINGTON, Texas - It was a night when everyone got into the act.
UTA cleared its bench midway through the second half as the Lady Mavs overwhelmed Southeastern Louisiana 85-41 in a Southland Conference game at Texas Hall Saturday afternoon.
UTA (12-9, 6-3) won for the third time in four games while Southeastern Louisiana falls to 9-10 and 2-7. The 44-point win was the largest margin of victory this season and most since a 97-52 victory over Sam Houston State on Jan. 13, 2002.
Junior forward Rola Ogunoye, who became UTA's 12th player to score 1,000 career points with a lay up with 2:35 left in the first half, scored a game-high 15 points. It was her 14th straight double figure game and her 18th this season.
Junior guard Krystal Buchanan and senior center Sheena Johnson pumped in 13 points each. LaToya Lewis added 10. Southeastern Louisiana was led by Shanna Achord's 12 points.
UTA scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back. A basket by Sheena Johnson with 16:12 to play in the first half gave UTA a 10-0 lead.
SELU cut the lead to 15-9 on a Tish Guy 3-pointer with 14:19 to go in the first half before UTA went on a 13-5 run. Back-to-back steals and lay ups from Sheena Johnson and Rola Ogunoye fueled the run as UTA built a 28-14 lead following a basket by Tojinay Thompson with 7:33 left. UTA stretched the lead to as many as 25 in the first half, 45-20, on a Terra Wallace 3-pointer with 35 seconds left.
SELU came out in the second half and went on a 6-3 run over the first 3:11 of the half, but that was about it as the Lady Lions did not score a point over the next 7:10 and UTA pushed its lead to 67-27 over that span.
The Lady Mavs would then empty their bench completely and not lose a beat. Freshman forward Ashley Purgason led the charge as she scored a career-best seven points in only six minutes of action. All-in-all 14 of the 16 players who saw action got in the scoring column. This marks the second time this season that 14 players have scored in a game.
Buchanan nearly added her name to record books again as she handed out 12 assists, falling just one assist shy of tying the single-game record. Buchanan herself along with Julie Kajihiio and Paige Smithers-Wojciak are the owners of the single game record of 13.
The Lady Mavs return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14 as they host Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. at Texas Hall.
