ARLINGTON, Texas - Katie Singleton's two-RBI single in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as Texas-Arlington edged past Houston 3-2 in non-conference softball action Tuesday evening at Allan Saxe Field.
The Lady Mavericks got on the board first after Beverly Rowan's run producing single sent Jenna Fortune across the plate to put UTA in front, 1-0 after only one complete frame. Fortune drew a lead off walk to reach base before advancing to second on a passed ball and stealing third.
UTA starter Jill Garro held Houston scoreless through four complete, before the Cougars settled for one run after a two-out rally in the fifth. Jaci Gonzalez's RBI single tied the game at one run apiece.
The Lady Mavericks answered in the bottom of the frame. Courtni Anderson started the attack with a one-out single through the gap and Dee Jay Nelson followed with a free pass before pinch hitter Falon Kwasnick's sinlge loaded the bases with only one out. UTA would capitalize, adding two runs on Katie Singleton's one-hopper to left to take a 3-1 lead.
Houston managed one run in the seventh to pull within one.
Garro imporved to 8-8 on the year with the win. The sophomore struck out seven and scattered six hits in 7.0 complete.
Crystal Briscoe (6-5) was tagged with the loss for the Cougars after giving up three runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
The squads will return to the field for the nightcap at 7 p.m.
