ERRORS COST MAVS IN 7-6 LOSS TO POKES

March 23, 2004

Box Score

STILLWATER, Oklahoma - Daniel Lenihan hit his first two collegiate home runs and totaled five RBIs, but it was not enough as Texas-Arlington made two costly errors, resulting in four unearned runs, in losing 7-6 to Oklahoma State Tuesday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The Mavericks (14-10) put a three-spot on the board in the first inning as Kasey Baker started the game with a single to center field and Aaron Batlle reached on a base on balls. With one out, Paul Bruder connected on an RBI single through the left side. Darrell Preston advanced the runners with a groundout to the right side before Lenihan doubled to the base of the wall in left center field to score both runners.

UTA added to its lead in the fourth inning as Preston led off with a double passed the bag at first and Lenihan followed with first career home run to right center field.

The Cowboys (16-7) offense came alive in the fourth inning to push five runs across and tie the game up. Rusty Ryal started the inning with a base hit to right center field. With one out, Jason Jaramilo doubled to right field to score the run. After the next batter was retired, Scott Kirby doubled to left field for the second run. Felix Peguero reached on a fielding error by Batlle before Chris Gutierrez made the Mavs pay with a three-run homer to left field.

OSU took its first lead of the game in the sixth inning as Ty Wright started the inning with a triple to right center field. He came into score when Scott Kriby struck out swinging, but the throw got by Preston at first.

The Pokes pushed across what became the game-winning run in the eighth inning when Wright started things with a single up the middle. Kirby followed with a routine single up the middle, but when the Mavs where slow to get the ball, Kirby stretched it into a double. Mario Matulich plated the run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

UTA threatened in the ninth inning as Lenihan led off with his second home run to left field. With one out, Ryan reached on a bunt single. Ryan Nelson drew a pinch-hit base on balls. Baker's hot shot to third was bobbled allowing Baker to beat out the game ending double play. With two outs, Batlle drilled the ball up the middle, but pitcher John Forrest knocked the ball down and had enough time to recover and throw Batlle out to end the game.

Lenihan led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of jacks and five runs batted in. Allen, Wright and Kirby each collected two hits for the Cowboys.

Forrest (2-1) picked up the victory by allowing one run on six hits in five innings of work. Michael Garza (1-1) took the loss after allowing one run on six hits in 1.1 innings of work.

The Mavericks return to action on Friday, March 26, as they open up a three-game Southland Conference series at Louisiana-Monroe. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at Indian Field.
