WACO, Texas - The Baylor offense exploded for nine runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth inning as they routed Texas-Arlington 13-2 Wednesday evening at the Baylor Ballpark in Waco.
The Bears (13-18) got on the board in the second inning as base hits by Josh Ford and Mike Pankratz put runners on the corners with two outs. The run came in when UTA starter Derek Brehm was called for a balk.
The Mavericks (19-13) bats came alive with two outs in the third inning as Kasey Baker bounced an infield single over the pitchers head and came around to score on Aaron Batlle's team-leading 12th double of the season to right field. Darrell Preston moved himself to within one RBI of the school record when he plated Batlle with a double passed the bag at first base.
BU broke the game open in the fifth inning as they plated nine runs on seven hits started by Paul Witt's bunt single to third base. Drew Sutton followed with a single to center field just in front of a diving Paul Bruder. The Bears successfully executed a hit-and-run as Michael Griffin singled through the right side to score the first run. Drew Brees knocked in the second run on a fielder's choice and Kyle Reynolds put two on with a single to right field. Ford walked to load the bases before Pankratz singled in two runs and Chase Gerdes followed with a run-producing single to center field. The big blow came when Drew Sutton hit a grand slam to right center field off of reliever Michael Garza.
The Bears bats continued to sizzle in the sixth as Reynolds reached second as left fielder Daniel Lenihan could not handle a fly ball in shallow left field and came around to score on a single to center field by Dillon. Dillon came in to score on back-to-back base hits by Pankratz and Gerdes. The final run came in on a one hopper to second in which UTA failed to turn the double play.
Preston led the offense with three of the five hits. Pankratz led the Bears with three hits, while Sutton had two hits and knocked in five.
Mark Lowe (0-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. Ryan LaMotta (1-3) earned the victory by only allowing one hit in two innings of work.
