SAN MARCOS, Texas - Back-to-back Texas-San Antonio home runs in the top of the tenth inning propelled the top-seeded Roadrunners to a 6-3 victory over Texas-Arlington as the Lady Mavericks were eliminated in day two action of the 2004 Southland Conference tournament in San Marcos. UTA closes the season with a 24-24-1overall mark.
The Lady Mavericks threatened in the home half of the first after Falon Kwasnick knocked the first pitch up the middle for a lead off single. Katie Singleton sacrificed Kwasnick to second and Beverly Rowan walked to put runners at first and second for UTA with only one out. UTSA ace Ursula Mares worked her way out of the jam, striking out Autumn Petrino and forcing designated player Dee Jay Nelson to ground out back to the circle to end the inning.
Jennifer Davis hit a two out single up the middle to start the Roadrunners rally in the top of the second frame. After a misplayed bunt single put runners on first and second for the 'Runners, Jenny Garcia doubled to the gap in right center to plate both runners and give UTSA an early 2-0 lead.
Jenna Fortune led off the UTA second with her fourth home run of the year as she knocked a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence to pull the Lady Mavs within one. After a Courtni Anderson ground out, first baseman Jill Garro earned a four-pitch walk and Kwasnick drove in the tying run with a double off the wall in left center.
After seven scoreless innings, UTSA came alive in the top of the tenth frame. A two-run homer by Aimee Murray and a solo shot from Krystal Gibson gave the 'Runners a 5-2 advantage and a Garcia ground out added one run as the regular season champions held a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the tenth.
UTA didn't fold as Petrino knocked a one-out double and scored on a single up the middle from Fortune to pull within three runs. A single from Anderson put runners on first and second but UTSA's Mares forced Garro to pop out to the shortstop.
Freshman Lauren Hebert (10-8) was tagged with the loss after scattering eight hits and five runs while striking out six.
Kwasnick and Fortune paced the Lady Mavs offense with three hits apiece.
The Lady Mavericks close out the year with a 24-24-1 overal mark.
