Seniors Jeff Murray and Tyrone Mordt fired 36-hole totals of two-over-par 146 to lead the UTA men's golf into fourth place after the opening day of the Baylor Invitational at the Bear Ridge Golf Course here Monday.
Cool temperatures and early morning rains made the course a challenge for the golfers as only tournament leader Lamar (578) posted a par-round with an even-par 288 in the afternoon to take a five shot lead over host Baylor (583). Southeastern Louisiana (587) is third while UTA (588) and Louisiana-Monroe (591) are close behind.
"We had about 10 three putts today and several double (bogeys) that we had to count," said head coach Jay Rees. "I told our guys we are striking the ball well enough to be leading this tournament. We need to cut out the mistakes. I told our guys not to worry about another team, just focus on trying to get better (Tuesday)."
Mordt and Murray are tied for 11th. Carmine Mediate of the Baylor green team lead after back-to-back rounds of 70 for a 140 total.
UTA sophomore Zack Reeves had rounds of 77 and 71 for a 148. Junior college standout Ryan Zamorano had a 78 and 72 and sophomore Michael Douthit carded rounds of 76 and 82.
Medalists Bryan Baker had a 79 and 78 while Chris Myers finished with 85-75.
The final round is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. for the Mavericks.
