The Texas-Arlington men's basketball team lost its second straight game of the season when it fell to cross-town rival TCU, 71-63, last Saturday. The Mavericks will try and rebound Saturday versus a hot San Diego team that has won six straight games.
The Mavericks were without starting forward Steven Thomas, but that didn't prevent them from almost defeating the Frogs. UTA held a lead midway through the second half and cut a large Frog lead to four points with a minute to play.
Freshman Brandon Long was a huge spark off of the bench scoring a career-high 15 points, which included four three-pointers. Sophomore forward Jermaine Griffin had a huge night as well, registering his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Thomas leads the Mavericks, averaging 13.0 points a game and 7.6 rebounds per contest, while senior Jarrett Howell has chipped in with 12.2 points and 3.7 assists per game.
San Diego (7-2) comes into the contest on a six-game winning streak which includes victories over Fresno State and San Diego State. Senior Nick Lewis leads the team, averaging 18.6 points a game to go along with his 6.1 rebounds. Senior Corey Belser is leading the team in rebounds, pulling down 7.0 rebounds a game.
The Toreros have averaged a blazing 82.8 points per game and have shot 49.3 percent from the field as a team. They registered 104 points against NAIA Point Loma Nazarene.
The Mavericks jumped on the Toreros last in Arlington, using a 20-5 run to open the game, but San Diego fought back and made it close. Texas-Arlington held them off for a 92-83.
Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (PST) at Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.
