ARLINGTON, Texas - Dallas Baptist right fielder Drew Holder drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning then made a spectacular catch against the wall in the bottom half of the inning as the Patriots defeated Texas-Arlington 4-2 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Thursday afternoon.
DBU (2-0) started the eighth inning as Cody Montgomery singled to center field. Ryan Olivo followed with a double to left field that put runners on second and third with one out. Holder drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field and Israel Victor added an insurance run with an RBI single to left field.
The Mavs (2-2) threatened in the home half of the inning as they had a runner on second with two outs when Aaron Batlle ripped a ball to the wall in right field, but Holder went crashing up against the padded wall and made the catch to kill the threat and the inning.
The Mavs got on the board in the fourth inning as Batlle started things with a double to straight away center field. Ryan Nelson did not leave him there long as he singled down the right field line to score Batlle. After moving to second on a David McLeod sacrifice bunt and to third on a Justin Stevens ground out, Ryan Nelson came in to score on Cary Nelson's single to right center field.
DBU quickly tied the game up in the fifth inning as Jeremy Goldschmeding ledoff the inning with a double to right field and Daniel Magness followed with a four-pitch walk. Brad Boles sacrificed the runners over before Matt Tucker plated both runners with a single to right center field.
Randall Taylor (1-0) earned the victory for DBU as he went seven innings allowing two runs on five hits. Dillon Farish (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Dillon Gee received a no-decision in his first collegiate start as he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of work.
Cary Nelson and Batlle each collected two hits for UTA. Victor and Goldschmeding had a pair of hits for the Patriots.
The Mavs return to action on Feb. 12 as they welcome 2004 College World Series participant Arkansas to Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. against the No. 29 Razorbacks.
