Steven Thomas scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as Texas-Arlington withstood a feisty St. Edward's effort in a 74-63 victory at Texas Hall.
UTA snaps a three-game losing streak and evens its record at 11-11. St. Edward's (6-19) lost its fifth straight game.
Thomas made 8-of-10 shots from the field as the Mavericks made 53.1 percent from the field (27 of 52) for the game. Kenneth Henderson canned 11 and Jermaine Griffin, Jarrett Howell and Stephen Floyd added 10 each. St. Edward's had three in double figures - Trumaine Ross (14), Ja'Faar Johnson (12 and Chris Smith (10).
UTA out-rebounded St. Edward's 35 to 22.
SEU outscored UTA 15-3 over a to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game with a Trumaine Ross three-pointer for a 37-36 edge with 18:01 to play.
UTA responded by going on a 10-0 run for a 46-37 lead with a Howell three-pointers with 13:57 to play in the game. St. Edward's cut the lead to two, 49-47, after a Ross jumper with 10:33 left in the game, but UTA put the game away with an 11-2 spurt fueled by three straight Thomas buckets.
The Mavericks built as much as a 16-point lead in the final minutes of the game, 71-55, after a Kenneth Henderson layup with 3:58 to play.
UTA returns to action Saturday when they travel to Louisiana-Monroe at 7:30 p.m.
