Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas - Clay Van Hook's RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth inning capped of a Texas rally as the No. 1 Longhorns rallied from two runs down in the eighth to hand Texas-Arlington a 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field.
Calvin Beamon started the ninth inning by being hit by a pitch before being sacrificed to second. Van Hook hit the first pitch he saw from Russell Reichenbach through the right side and Van Hook just beat the throw from right fielder Scott Williams for the game winning run.
The Horns (12-0) got on the board in the third inning as David Maroul singled through the left side with one out. Robby Hudson followed with a bunt base hit to third and Maroul hustled around to third when Daniel Macha charged to make the play. A wild pitch scored the first run before a Seth Johnston single to left center plated the second.
UTA (4-7) got the offense going in the fifth inning as Aaron Batlle and Scott Williams hit back-to-back singles. Brock Wilson followed with a great bunt down the third base line to load the bases. After a fielder's choice retired a runner at home, former Longhorn Nathan Warrick cleared the bases with a double over the head of the left fielder. The fourth run of the inning came on a Ryan Nelson single back through the box to score Warrick from second.
Freshman right-hander Jeremiah Haar made the most of his first collegiate start as he went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
UT tied the game up in the eighth inning off UTA freshman Dillon Gee as Clay Van Hook walked, Drew Stubbs singled and Johnston drew a base on balls. Blake Pierson came into the game and gave up a two-run single through the left side to Taylor Teagarden before getting out of another bases loaded jam by enticing a 4-6-3 double play.
Pierson (0-1) took the loss as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Buck Cody (2-0) got the win by throwing two perfect innings of relief. UTA left-hander B.J. Brandenberger saw his first action of the season and threw two shutout innings.
Warrick led the offense with two hits and three RBIs. Williams added two hits. Johnston was the only Horn to collect two hits.
The Mavs return to action on Feb. 25 as they begin a three-game series with Texas-Pan American. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
