ARLINGTON, Texas - Opportunities were few and far between, but Texas-Arlington did not take advantage of the one's they had as Louisiana-Monroe's Matt Green outlasted Jake Baxter 4-2 Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
In a much anticipated pitching matchup, both pitchers did not disappoint. Green (6-1) earned the victory by throwing seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, while striking out 12. Baxter (6-1)suffered his first loss as he allowed four runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts in the complete game effort. Jared Jennings came on to earn his second save of the season he allowed one run on three hits in two innings of work.
The Mavs (15-15, 5-2 SLC) got on the board in the third inning as Kyle Thomason hit the first pitch he saw into left center field for the first hit of the game for UTA. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Thomason hustled around to score on a Nathan Warrick single up the middle.
The Indians (15-10, 2-5 SLC) took the lead in the sixth inning as Steve Lawler started the inning with a single through the left side. Glenn Jackson put down a sac bunt, but the throw to second was not in time to retire the runner. After a successful bunt, James Bennett plated two runs with a double to left center.
UTA threatened to tie the score in the seventh inning as Josh McSpadden ripped a one-out triple to left center. Aaron Batlle followed with a bloop over the drawn-in infield that was nearly caught by Lawler, but quickly picked up and thrown to home to get McSpadden trying to score.
ULM added to its lead in the eighth inning as Jackson singled to left center and advanced to third on Adam Barfield's single down the right field line. Bennett drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Indians added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as Dexter Fontenot hit a bloop single to right field and Tony Lamothe followed with a double down the left field line. Todd Garvin drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to left field.
UTA got a run back in the home half of the inning as Aaron Batlle hit a single to left center and scored on Alex Schenck's pinch-hit triple to left center.
The Mavs and Indians will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. UTA will send RHP Grant Varnell (2-2, 2.81 ERA) to the mound, while ULM will counter with RHP Matt Lane (2-3, 5.40 ERA).
