THIBODAUX, La. - It was a good day to be a Texas-Arlington senior on Sunday as Aaron Batlle and Ryan Nelson each drove in four runs and Cary Nelson drove in three and scored four times as the Mavs defeated Nicholls State 16-6 at Ray E. Didier Field.
UTA (24-24, 13-8 SLC) got on the board in the second inning as Cary Nelson drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on an Aaron Batlle single through the right side. Alex Schenck drove in the run with groundout to first.
The Colonels (20-26, 6-15 SLC) tied the game in the home half of the inning as Michael Muscato hit a solo home run to left field.
The Mavs regained the lead in the third inning as Boomer Welles doubled to left center and Scott Williams walked. Cary Nelson drove in both runners with a double down the right field line. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Cary Nelson scored on a groundout off the bat of Batlle.
UTA added to its lead in the fourth inning as Brett Lewis started things with a double to left field and scored on Ryan Nelson's double off the center field wall. With two outs, Welles singled to right field and Williams walked to load the bases. Cary Nelson drove in a run with a single into the hole at short and everyone advanced as the attempted throw to second went into right field. Batlle drove in two more runs with a single to center field.
NSU added a pair of runs in the fourth inning as Muscato walked and scored on a Keith Delahoussaye single to right field. Delahoussaye came around to score on a fielding error by the Mavs.
The Colonels added three more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Josh Thomas and RBI doubles from Muscato and Delahoussaye.
UTA reached double digits in the seventh as Nathan Warrick beat out an infield single to second and Lewis was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, Ryan Nelson drove in both runners with a single up the middle. Williams drove in the third run of the inning with a single up the middle.
The Mavs added another run in the eighth inning as Batlle walked to start the inning and scored on Ryan Nelson's fielder's choice groundout to third.
UTA pushed three more runs across in the ninth inning as Williams reached on an error and advanced to third on Cary Nelson's double to left center. Batlle plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Alex Schenck drove in the second run with a single through the left side and scored on a Lewis double to right center.
Dillon Gee (5-5) picked up the victory as he allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits in five innings of work. Justin Breaux (2-5) took the loss as he allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in 3.1 innings. Dillon Farish earned his second save by allowing just one hit in four innings of relief.
The Mavs return to action on May 3 when they travel to take on TCU. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
