ARLINGTON, Texas - Five games against teams that competed in the 2005 NCAA Tournament and a regional television appearance on Fox Sports Southwest against Texas, highlight the 2005-06 Texas-Arlington men's basketball schedule which was released today.
Texas-Arlington returns four starters from last year's team, including 2004-05 first-team all-SLC selection Steven Thomas. Thomas leads a group of 11 returning letterwinners into the 2005-06 season. Thomas led the team last year, averaging 17.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest.
The Mavericks, coming off of a 13-15 season in `04-05, opens their campaign at the 11th Annual Black Coaches Association (BCA) Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Sunday, Nov. 13. The three-day, eight-team exempt tournament, hosted by the University of Washington, features four games each day and concludes with the championship game on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Texas-Arlington will open against Miami (Fla.) at 2:30 p.m. (PT) on Nov. 13. The other teams in the tournament are Air Force, Morgan State, UNC-Greensboro, Northern Arizona and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
After visiting Oklahoma State, a 2005 NCAA "Sweet 16" team, on Nov. 18, the Mavericks will have three straight home games against in-state foes: Texas-Dallas (Nov. 23), Texas Wesleyan (Nov. 28) and Texas-Pan American (Dec. 1).
Texas-Arlington will then hit the road for three straight contests. The first will be a matchup at in-state rival Texas to be televised by Fox Sports Southwest on Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. The Longhorns advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight season last year. From there the Mavericks take on cross-town rival TCU in Fort Worth on Dec. 10.
The Mavericks return home for a game with Texas-Tyler on Dec. 22, which is sandwiched between road games versus San Diego (Dec. 18) and an appearance in the 2005 Comcast Lobo Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico (Dec. 28-29). Texas-Arlington will face Radford in the opening round on Dec. 28.
Texas-Arlington, who finished eighth in the Southland Conference last season with a 7-9 record in league play, opens SLC play against Northwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Texas Hall, followed by another home game against Texas State on Thursday, Jan. 12.
This past season, the SLC eliminated the men and women doubleheaders and have gone to mirror scheduling which will have the men at home while the women are on the road against the same opponent, and vice versa. Conference games will be played on Thursdays and Saturdays, with an occasional Wednesday game.
The Mavericks will welcome defending SLC Champion Southeastern Louisiana to Texas Hall on Jan. 19, and will end the conference season with a home game versus McNeese State on March 3.
