La. TECH AVOIDS SWEEP WITH WALK-OFF SINGLE IN NINTH

Feb. 12, 2006

Box Score

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech pinch hitter Ryan Hamilton delivered a RBI single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Bulldogs the victory in the series finale, 5-4, in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

Tech (2-4) got things going in the ninth with Adam Cobb delivering a single up the middle. A walk and a base hit to left from Patrick Thomas loaded the bases for Hamilton to deliver.

UTA (2-1) got on the board in the third inning as Kyle Rudy drew a one-out walk. James Smith followed with a single back through the box and Collin Garner walked to load the bases. David McLeod drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to right field and both runners advanced when the throw to the plate got by the catcher. Adam Moore then received his fourth intentional pass of the weekend and Justin Stevens made them pay with a two-run single to left center field. Colin Booher drove in the fourth run of the inning with a single down the right field line.

Mavs' freshman right hander Ryan Martin ran into some trouble in the home half of the third inning as he gave up a pair of singles and a walk with one out. Bulldog three-hole hitter Brandon Hudson was primed to get La. Tech back into the ballgame, but Martin was up to the task as he enticed a 4-6-3 double play to get out of the jam and inning without any damage.

Tech got a pair of runs back in the fourth inning as after a couple of walks, Kevin Winn delivered an RBI single to left center, followed by a successful double steal for the second run.

The Bulldogs got within one run in the fifth inning as Cobb beat out a swinging bunt down the third base line. The next batter attempted to put down the sacrifice bunt, but popped up to third. Booher's attempted throw to double off the runner sailed over the head of first baseman allowing the runner to advance to second. A wild pitch and passed ball allowed the runner to score an unearned run.

Tech tied the game in the sixth inning as Chris Kersten singled to left field to start the inning. After a pair of wild pitches moved the runner to third, Nick Grunenwald drove in the run as he reached on a fielding error.

Ryan Simon (0-1) was the tough luck loser as he tossed 2.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts. Alan Knotts (1-1) picked up the victory as he pitched two innings of shutout ball.

Smith led the Mavs offense with a pair of hits, while Stevens drove in two runs.

The Mavs return to the diamond on Feb. 14 as they travel to take on Baylor. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark.
