WACO, Texas - After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, #23 Baylor responded with the next 17 runs, including at least three runs in each of the final four innings in defeating Texas-Arlington 17-4 Tuesday evening at Baylor Ballpark.
UTA 2-2) got on the board in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases on three straight hits. Collin Garner started the game with a single through the left side and was followed by bloop single to left center from David McLeod and a single down the right field line from Adam Moore. The first run came in on a double play before Brock Wilson walked and stole second. With two runners in scoring position, Colin Booher's chopper into the hole at short was thrown away by the third baseman allowing two more runs to score.
The Mavs pushed another run across in fourth inning as Daniel Rieder and Kyle Rudy had back-to-back singles up the middle to start the inning. Kyle Thomason drove in Rieder with a solid single to left center.
The Bears (4-0) got back into the game in the fifth inning as Kevin Sevigny and Chase Gerdes drew back-to-back one-out walks chasing starter Chris Taylor from the contest. Beamer Weems greeted UTA reliever Kyle Gainley with a three-run shot over the left field wall. After a walk to the next hitter, Gainley settled in and got the next batter to hit into a fielder's choice on got out of the inning with a strikeout.
BU took control of the game in the sixth inning as Matt Sodolak reached as the first baseman dropped the throw and advanced to third on Drew Bias' single down the right field line. After a wild pitch scored a run, Sevigny singled through the left side. Gerdes plated the first run of the inning with bunt base hit to first base. The big blow of the game following a pitching change as Zach Dillon greeted Nathan Long with a three-run home run to right field. Fortenberry drove in the fifth run of the inning with a triple down the right field line.
The Bears added to the lead in the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs and Dillon's fly ball out in front of home plate fell harmlessly to the ground for a two-RBI single. Russo followed with a three-run shot to left field.
Gainley (0-1) took the loss as he allowed five runs, two earned, on four hits in one inning of work. Owen Reid (1-0) earned the victory as he allowed one hit and struck out two in 2.2 innings of relief.
The Mavs return to action this weekend as they host the 2006 UTA Invitational on Feb. 17-19. UTA will take on Illinois State on Friday. The Mavs will take on Kansas State on Saturday and Oral Roberts on Sunday. All three games will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
