MIDLAND, Texas - Designated hitter Travis DeBondt came off the bench to deliver a two-out RBI single through the right side to give Oral Roberts an 8-7, 11-inning victory over Texas-Arlington at the Midland Collegiate Classic.
ORU (5-1) started the 11th inning with Tim Torres delivering a single to right field. After a flyout and a stolen base, walk and strikeout, DeBondt hit the first pitch he saw through the right side for the game winner.
The Mavs (3-5) got on the board in the first inning as Daniel Rieder, David McLeod and Adam Moore all singled to load the bases. With one out, Kyle Thomason drove in the first run with a fielder's choice groundout before the second run scored on a balk.
ORU (5-1) got a run back in the second inning as they loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a base on balls before a balk was called to score a run.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the third inning as Tim Torres and Jake Kahaulelio drew walks to start the inning. With two outs, Ben Baker delivered a two-run single through the left side, but was thrown out at second trying to advance on the throw to the plate.
ORU added to its lead in the sixth inning as Baker blooped a double in front of a diving Thomason in left before being plated on a Pat Warfle double just inside the bag at third. After a walk, the second run of the inning scored on a fielding error by Maverick shortstop Kyle Rudy.
UTA tied the game in top of the eighth inning as McLeod and Moore delivered back-to-back one-out singles. Stevens drove in McLeod with a double off the base of the left-center field wall and Danny Slinkman delivered a two-run single to center field for his first collegiate hit.
The Mavs gained the lead in the ninth inning Rudy singled to center field and Rieder reached when his sacrifice bunt attempt was misplayed by the catcher. McLeod sacrificed the runners into scoring position and Moore was intentionally walked. With two outs, Slinkman delivered another two-run single back up the middle.
The Eagles did not go away in the home half of the ninth as they scored two runs to send the game into extra innings. Duffy started the inning with an infield single and Kelly Minnisale followed with a single to right center. After a sacrifice bunt an intentional walk, the bases were loaded for Chad Rothford to deliver and RBI single to center and Brain Agauilar tied the game on a sacrifice fly to center.
Randy Cornejo (0-1) took the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Chris Ashman (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed two unearned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Offensively, the Mavs pounded out 14 hits with McLeod and Stevens leading the way with three hits apiece. Rieder, Moore, Rudy Slinkman each added two.
The Mavs return to action this evening as they play Texas Tech in the second game of the Midland Collegiate Classic. First pitch is set for approximately 6 p.m. at Citibank Ballpark.
