MAVS NO-HIT

Feb. 25, 2006

Box Score

MIDLAND, Texas - Dallas Baptist starter Rodney Brantley pitched the best game of his life as he needed only 98 pitches to toss a no hitter in defeating Texas-Arlington 9-1 Saturday afternoon at the Midland Collegiate Classic.

Brantley (3-0) allowed one unearned run and struck out seven hitters and only walked one. He induced 19 ground ball outs and only one flyball out.

The Patriots (7-3) struck in the first inning as Cody Montgomery hit a one-out solo shot over the right center field wall.

UTA (3-7) took advantage of a pair of Patriot throwing errors in the third inning to tie the game. With one out, Collin Garner reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and Daniel Rieder followed with a fielder's choice to second that was thrown into left field to put runners on second and third with one out. David McLeod drove in the run with an RBI groundout up the middle.

The big inning got the Mavs again in the fourth inning as DBU pushed across five runs and it could have been more if it wasn't for the diving stop up the middle to start a double play from Rieder. Jeremy Goldschmedling singled to right and stole second before scoring on Drew Holder's triple off the wall in right field. Matt Tucker drove in Holder with a single through the right side of a drawn-in infield. Evan Bigley followed with a solo shot into the jet stream of right center. Israel Victor drew a walk and advanced to third on Brad Boles's single to center. Both runners scored on an Austin Krum double to left field that was misjudged.

DBU added to its lead in the seventh inning as they rallied with two outs as Holder singled up the middle and scored on Tucker's double to left center. Damian Gomez would follow with a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side before Bigley blooped an RBI double down the right-field line.

Dillon Gee (1-2) took the loss as he allowed nine runs on 12 hits with a career-best eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Mavs return to action on Feb. 28-March 4 at the Hawaii Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii.
