MAVS COMPLETE SWEEP OF DEMONS

March 12, 2006

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT-Arlington baseball team picked up its first Southland Conference opening weekend sweep since 1989 as the Mavericks completed the sweep Northwestern State with a 6-1 defeat Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

UTA got another strong effort on the mound as left-hander Randy Cornejo (2-1) picked up the victory in his first career start. The junior allowed one run on five hits in five innings of work. The Mavs also got two shutout innings each from Austin Bridges and Brandon Endsley.

The Demons (10-9, 0-3 SLC) put together a two-out rally in the second inning as Ben Rodriguez drew a walk and Scott Pittenger singled to left field. Nine-hole hitter Wesley Turner drove in the run with a bloop single down the right field line.

The Mavs (7-13, 3-0 SLC) took the lead in the home-half of the second as Robby Winn ripped the first pitch back through the box. Kyle Thomason and Brock Wilson drew walks to load the bases with one out and Kyle Rudy plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Thomason tagged and went to third on the play and scored on a passed ball just two pitches later.

UTA added to the lead in the third inning as Moore singled to center field and went to third as Danny Slinkman's sacrifice bunt was thrown down the right field line by the pitcher. After Moore was erased at third on a fielder's choice, a balk was called to putter two runners in scoring position. Thomason drove in the run with a fielder's choice as his shot up the middle ricochet off the pitcher to the shortstop to get the runner at third.

The Mavs wore out the lines in the sixth as Daniel Rieder started the inning by slicing a double just inside the left field line and David McLeod sliced an RBI triple just inside the right field line. Moore drove in a run with double down the left field line. After two outs, Thomason walked and David Newby was hit by a pitch. Ben Burum drove in the final run of the inning with a bases loaded pinch-hit walk.

Kyle Broughton (2-2) took the loss for the Demons as he allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings.

Moore led the offense with three hits and drew his team-leading sixth intentional walk of the season.

The Mavs return to action on March 14 as they host Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
