ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington sophomore third baseman David McLeod put his name in the record books as he went 5-for-5 in helping the Mavericks remain unbeaten in Southland Conference action with a 7-3 victory over Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The five-hit performance marked the 27th time that a Maverick has collected five hits in a game.
"I came out and didn't have a good batting practice, so I just washed it away while they were hitting before the game" said McLeod. "Came out the first AB and hit a little single over second base and the second at-bat came up feeling confident and got a changeup inside and just hit it down the line. After that I just felt really comfortable and felt that anything they threw up there I could hit."
The Mavs used some timely hitting with two outs in the fourth inning to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Robby Winn started things with a single up the middle and was still on first with two outs. Kyle Rudy would keep the inning rolling with a triple to straight away center field. Daniel Rieder followed with an RBI single up the middle and McLeod advanced him with a single up the middle. Adam Moore drove in a run with a single through the left side to give UTA the 4-2 advantage.
A leadoff walk led to a run for the Colonels in the second inning as Patrick Harris walked on five pitches and was sacrificed to second. Keith Delahoussaye drove in the run with a single to right field.
UTA (11-15, 7-0 SLC) tied the game in home-half of the inning as Kyle Thomason drew a one-out walk. Brock Wilson followed with a double through the right side and Rudy drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
NICH (8-18, 2-7 SLC) regained the lead in the third as Michael Roberts hit a solo shot down the right field line for his second home run of the season.
The Colonels got another run in the seventh as Thomas Bourne singled and went to second on a failed pick-off attempt. He would score as the next hitter reached on a throwing error by the shortstop.
The Mavs got the run back in the seventh as McLeod singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. After a Moore base hit, Stevens plated McLeod with a fielder's choice into the hole at short.
UTA sealed the game in the eighth as Wilson walked and came around to score on Rieder's single into the hole at short and subsequent throwing error. McLeod followed that up with a run-producing single through the right side.
Moore joined McLeod with a solid showing at the plate as the designated hitter went 3-for-4 with an RBI and was also hit by a pitch.
Nathan Long (1-0) picked up his first collegiate victory as allowed one unearned run on one hit and five strikeouts in three innings of relief. Austin Bridges (1) picked up the save as he struck out two and retired all nine hitters he faced. Chris Greer (1-3) took the loss as he gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings.
The Mavs return to action Tuesday evening as they travel to take on Oral Roberts. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
