HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Sophomore Dillon Gee had his best outing of the season, but did not get the help from his defense or enough support from his offense as Texas-Arlington fell 7-1 to #11 Arkansas Saturday afternoon in the final game for both teams at the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.
Gee (1-4) allowed four runs, only two earned, on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four.
The Razorbacks (13-1) got on the board in the first inning as Ben Tschepikow hit a solo home run to right field. With two outs, Danny Hamblin singled to third and came around to scored when Brian Walker's single to left field was misplayed by Kyle Thomason.
Defense failed the Mavs in the second inning as two straight errors from the left side of the infield and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. UTA starter Dillon Gee minimized the damage as he induced a 6-4-3 double play that scored a run and a flyout to left center ended the inning.
UTA (4-11) finally got run in the third inning, but could have had more. James Smith started the inning with an infield single up the middle and advanced to third on Daniel Rieder's single off the right field wall. David McLeod plated a run with a single down the right field line. UA went to the bullpen and got Brian McLelland who calmly struck out Adam Moore, Ben Burum and Justin Stevens to end the inning.
The Hogs broke the game open in the seventh inning as Stephen Robison beat out a bunt base hit to third and was advanced on a sacrifice bunt. Gee exited the game after 99 pitches and his bullpen allowed a run on a pair of wild pitches and then gave up a two-run double to Danny Hamblin.
McLelland (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed three hits and struck out three in 2.2 innings of work.
Rieder, McLeod and Smith led the Mavs offense with two hits apiece. Moore has now hit safely in 14 of the 15 games this season with his double in the fifth inning.
The Mavs return to action on March 7 as they host Baylor at Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
