HAMMOND, La. - Juniors Daniel Rieder and Adam Moore combined for seven hits and Kyle Rudy delivered his first career home run as UT-Arlington pounded out 15 hits in a 10-8 victory over Southeastern Louisiana Friday evening in a key Southland Conference contest at Alumni Field.
UTA (20-25, 13-7 SLC) got on the board in the third inning as Rieder started a two-out rally with a double down the left field line. After a wild pitch, David McLeod drove in the runner with a double just inside the bag at third.
The Mavs added to the their lead in the fourth as Ben Burum singled to center, Robby Winn chopped a ball over the head of the third baseman and Danny Slinkman walked to start the inning. James Smith extended his hit streak to eight games with a two-run double down the left field line.
The Lions (16-26, 7-12 SLC) came storming back in the fourth inning as a hit by pitch, sacrifice bunt, walk and passed ball put runners on the corners with one out. Kyle Ginn drove in the first run with an RBI groundout before Jason Waguespack and Bryan Frichter collected RBI singles. After a walk loaded the bases, Tony Suarez stole home on the catcher's throw back to the pitcher to give the Lions the lead.
The Mavs offense returned in the sixth as Smith was hit by a pitch, before Kyle Rudy and Rieder singled to load the bases with one out. McLeod drove in a run when he reached on a fielding error before Moore drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line. Burum drove in the fourth run of the inning with a groundout to first.
SLU got one run back in the home-half of the inning as Suarez lined a solo homer just over the left field wall.
Rudy answered back in the seventh as he hit his first career home run over the left field wall for a solo shot.
UTA took advantage of sloppy fielding in the ninth to add a pair of runs. Brock Wilson singled through the right side and stole second. Rudy reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. Rieder drove in a run with single to short and McLeod put down a successful sacrifice bunt to first base.
The Lions made the game interesting in the ninth as they got RBI singles from Newman, Summerlin and Imhoff to pull within two runs. With runners on the corners and two outs, Imhoff was caught stealing and Spencer struck out swinging to end the game.
Kyle Gainley (2-5) earned the victory as he allowed five runs on five hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four after retiring the first nine batters he faced. Jeremy Mizell (5-4) took the loss as he gave up seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits in 5.2 innings. Taylor (5) earned the save as he gave up two hits and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.
Rieder led the offense with four hits, while Moore added three and Burum and Rudy two apiece. McLeod drove in three runs in his first action since April 1.
The Mavs and Lions will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played at 3 p.m., but was moved up due to the threat of rain.
