HAMMOND, La. - The UT-Arlington offense collected 15 hits and the Southeastern Louisiana defense committed five errors, but it was Bryan Frichter's second home run of the day that proved to be the difference as the Lions hung on for a wild 9-7 victory over the Mavs Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Lions (17-26, 8-12 SLC) got their offense rolling in the second inning as Frichter followed up a Tony Suarez walk with a two-run home run to right field. Two more base hits put runners on the corners with one out before Ty Summerlin hit a check swing double over the head of the third baseman for an RBI double. SLU had a chance to break it open but Richard Imhoff and Ryan Spencer both went down swinging.
SLU added to its lead in the fourth as Frichter singled to right field and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Dillon Sudduth drove in the runner with a groundout to short.
The inability to make the play in the infield for the Mavericks led to a pair of Lions runs in the fifth inning. Ryan Spencer started the inning by reaching on a pop up just over the mound and Kyle Ginn reached on a bunt to the first baseman. With one out, Tony Suarez plated both runners with a double into the gap in right center.
UTA (20-26, 13-8 SLC) got a pair of runs in the seventh as Danny Slinkman singled through the left side with two outs before Kyle Rudy hit his second home run in as many days to left center.
The Lions got the runs back plus some insurance as Frichter hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to left center.
The Mavs got back into the game in the eighth inning as three Lions errors led to four unearned runs. Adam Moore reached on an error to start the inning and was still on first with two outs. Four straight hits from Justin Stevens, Slinkman, Rudy and Brock Wilson plated three runs. The fourth run scored on a fielding error by the third baseman off the bat of James Smith.
The ninth inning was just a continuation of the previous inning for the Mavs as Winn singled up the middle with one out. After pinch runner Collin Garner stole second, David McLeod drove in Garner with a single through the left side. With two outs, Ben Burum delivered a pinch-hit infield single and a throwing error put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Kyle Thomason followed with a slow roller to second that got Thomason by a step and ended the game.
Dillon Gee (5-7) took the loss as he gave up six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Wade Miley (4-6) picked up the victory as he gave up six runs, two earned, on 12 hits in 7.2 innings.
The Mavs and Lions will play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field.
