SAN MARCOS, Texas - The UT-Arlington offense showed off some power Friday evening as the Mavericks blasted three home runs and put up six runs in the top of the eighth inning in rallying for a 7-5 victory over Texas State at Bobcat Field. The victory was the second straight victory in San Marcos and just the second in the last 16 games. More importantly, it secured a spot in the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament in Beaumont on May 24-27.
UTA (23-29, 16-10 SLC) entered the eighth inning trailing by two runs. James Smith started the inning by drawing a full-count walk before Daniel Rieder ripped a two-run shot to right field on a 3-2 pitch to tie the game. David McLeod followed with a base on balls and Adam Moore greeted the new Bobcat pitcher with a two-run blast deep over the fence in left field. With one out, a walk and a throwing error put two runners in scoring position for Kyle Rudy who came through with a two-run double into the gap in left center. The six runs in the inning came on only three hits, but the Mavs took advantage of five Bobcat walks.
TXST (24-27, 16-9 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as Cassidy Dresch drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Jones followed with a two-run line drive homer to left center.
The Bobcats added a run in the third as Dresch reached on a two-base throwing error and scored two batters later on a Luke Cannon sacrifice fly to center field.
After squandering an opportunity to score a few innings earlier, UTA got on the board in the seventh as Winn started the inning with a solo shot to left center.
TXST got a pair of runs back in the home-half of the eighth as Cannon hit his conference leading 14th home run of the season for a solo shot and Dawid Bednarek followed three batters later with an RBI single to center field.
Dillon Gee (6-8) picked up the victory as he allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 7.2 innings. He walked two and struck out five. Scott Moore (8-4) took the loss as he gave up four runs on four hits in seven-plus innings. He struck out eight, but walked six. Chris Taylor (6) earned the save by allowing one hit in 1.1 innings.
The Mavs and Bobcats will play the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
