SUNDAY HANGOVER

May 14, 2006

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas - UT-Arlington felt a hangover from their ninth inning loss on Saturday as they came out flat in dropping a 6-0 decision to Texas State Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

The Bobcats (26-27, 18-9 SLC) got on the board in the sixth inning as David Wood followed up Cody Merrell's double to right center with an RBI double into the gap in left center. Jared Bunn followed with a single to left field and got caught in a run-down between first and second allowing the runner to score from third.

TXST took advantage of some sloppy play from the Mavs in the fourth to add a pair of runs. After a double by Wood and a strikeout, a walk put two runners on for a slow grounder to second in which the double-play could not be turned. The runner at third took a wide turn and the throw to the plate was wild allowing the run to score. The next hitter hit a slow roller to short for a base hit and the throwing error allowed another run to score.

The Cats added another run in the sixth as a pair of hits and a sac bunt set up Elliott Babcock's RBI groundout to short.

The Mavs (23-31, 16-12 SLC) had a chance to climb back into the game in the seventh Kyle Thomason and Collin Garner singled to start the inning. After a one-out single by Daniel Rieder loaded the bases, David McLeod hit into the inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

TXST plated a run in the bottom of the seventh as a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt set up a Cody Merrell sacrifice fly to right field.

Chris Taylor (3-5) took the loss as he gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked three. Mike Hart (3-2) picked up the victory as he allowed no runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. He struck out three and did not walk a hitter.

The lone bright spot for UTA is Robby Winn extended his hit streak to 17 games with a single through the left side in the sixth inning.

The Mavs return to action on Tuesday, May 16, as they travel to play Metroplex rival TCU. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Lupton Stadium.
