DALLAS, Texas - Dallas Baptist center fielder Austin Krum sent the Patriot fans home happy as he delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to send UT-Arlington to a 9-5 defeat Thursday evening at Patriot Field.
UTA (23-33) got on the board in the second inning as Ben Burum started things by blasting a 3-2 pitch well over the fence in right center field.
The lead was short lived as the Patriots (32-21) used the first two pitches of the inning to take the lead. Drew Holder ripped the first pitch threw the left side and Matt Tucker went opposite field for a two-run shot on the first pitch he saw.
The Mavs tied the game up in the third as Collin Garner singled to left field and went to third on a successful hit and run through the left side off the bat of Daniel Rieder. David McLeod drove in Garner with a solid single to center field.
DBU used the long ball to regain the lead in the fourth as Holder was first pitch swinging again and ripped the offering over the right field wall for a solo shot.
The first pitch, long ball trend continued in the fifth as Kyle Rudy hit the first pitch he saw well over the left field wall.
The Mavs took the lead in the top of the ninth as Burum ripped the first pitch of the inning into the gap in right center. Robby Winn followed with an infield single to second and went to second when the throw sailed into the dugout, allowing the winning run to score.
DBU responded in the home-half of the ninth as with a runner on second and two outs, Brad Boles laced a double into the gap in left center to tie the game.
UTA again took the lead in the 10th as Adam Moore delivered a solo home run to center field.
Dillon Gee was very effective for the Mavs in the no decision as he allowed three runs on 10 hits, while striking out a career-best 11 batters in nine innings of work.
Erik Cartmill (1-1) took the loss as he allowed two runs in one-third of an inning. Stuart Sutherland (2-2) picked up the victory after allowing one run on three hits in two innings.
The Mavs and Patriots will play the second game of the series tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington.
