ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT-Arlington offense matched Dallas Baptist on the scoreboard in every inning and turned a deficit into a lead as the Mavericks pushed across seven runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Patriots 10-7 Friday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark and even the series at one.
Adam Moore started the inning with a base on balls and went to second on a wild pitch. Ben Burum hit a fly ball to the wall in center field that was dropped, putting two runners in scoring position. Robby Winn and Danny Slinkman followed with RBI singles and Brock Wilson followed with a pinch hit single to reload the bases. Kyle Rudy drove in a run by being hit by a pitch and Collin Garner plated a run with a single to left field. Daniel Rieder drove in a run with a groundout to first and a second run scored when the first baseman through the ball to the backstop trying to get a runner at the plate. The final run scored on a David McLeod sacrifice bunt to first.
The Patriots (32-22) and more specifically Austin Krum picked up right where they left off last night as Krum's first swing of the night resulted in a solo home run to right.
The Mavs (24-33)responded with a solo shot of their own as Moore hit a solo shot off the scoreboard in right center for his 10th of the year.
DBU added another run in the second as a walk and a single put runners on the corners with two outs. The run came into score as Jeremy Goldschmeding pop up in the infield was dropped by the pitcher.
UTA got the run back in the home-half of the second as Slinkman started the inning with a walk. After a stolen base and a couple of outs, Garner drove in the runner with a double down the left field line, the first extra-base hit of his career.
The Mavs gained their first lead in the third as Moore was hit on the first pitch of the inning and went to second on a Burum single through the right side. With one out, Slinkman drove in Moore with a solid single back through the box.
Krum got back into the act in the fourth as he hit his second home run of the game over the right field wall for a solo shot.
The Patriots took advantage of a costly Maverick error in the fifth to plate three unearned runs. With two outs, a ball off the bat of Matt Tucker was mishandled by the second baseman. Goldschmeding made UTA pay with a two-run single to left center and Drew Holder followed with an RBI single to right.
DBU got a run back in the sixth as Ross Olson blooped a double down the left field line and scored on Evan Bigley's single to left field.
Chris Taylor was the unlucky benefactor of a few errors in the field, one by himself, but managed to struck out a career-best 11 batter over 4.2 innings. He allowed six runs, two earned, on seven hits.
Austin Bridges (4-4) earned the victory as he allowed one run on three hits in 4.1 innings. He walked two and struck out five. Jordan Craft (4-3) took the loss as he gave up nine runs, seven earned, on nine hits in four-plus innings.
The Mavs and Patriots will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. The game will make the final home game for seniors Justin Stevens and Kyle Thomason.
