ERROR COMPLETES IMPROBABLE COMEBACK

May 27, 2006

Box Score

BEAUMONT, Texas - The UT-Arlington baseball team scored seven unanswered runs, including the game winner on a throwing error in the top of the 10th inning to advance to the Southland Conference Tournament championship game with an 8-7 victory over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Mavs scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning as Robby Winn singled to left field and was removed for pinch-runner Matthew Otteman. The rally looked to be dead as Otteman remained at first with two outs before Kyle Rudy delivered a single through the left side. James Smith followed with a pinch-hit chopper to third that pulled the first baseman off the bag with the wide throw, allowing the runner to score from second.

UTA (28-34) got on the board in the first inning as David McLeod doubled into the gap in right center and Adam Moore followed with a sharp single back through the box.

Early miscues continued to hamper the Mavs in the early innings as a pair of first inning errors led to a pair of unearned runs. Following an error, groundout and base hit and error, the Cardinals had two runners in scoring position with one out. Will Henderson made the Mavs pay with a two-run single to right field.

The Cardinal (35-23) offense was back at it in the second inning as they got an RBI double off the bat of Jo Jo Haney and followed it up with an RBI single to center from Erik Kanaby.

LU added three insurance runs in the fourth as they got a bases loaded walk to Colt Crawford, fielder's choice RBI from Collin DeLome and an RBI single from Henderson.

The Mavs offense came alive in the eighth inning as the team collected six hits and pushed across six runs to tie the score. Daniel Rieder and McLeod single to start things and Moore delivered an RBI double into the gap in left center. With one out, Robby Winn delivered an RBI single up the middle.

The key play of the inning came off the bat of Danny Slinkman as his RBI fielder's choice into the hole at short was thrown into right field. Brock Wilson followed with a run-producing single to right field and Kyle Rudy was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Daniel Rieder delivered a two-run double into the gap in right center to tie the score before the runner from first was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The story of the day was the left arm of Ryan Riddle (4-3)who came back after throwing four shutout innings yesterday to shut out the Cardinals on six hits over 6.2 innings. He now has 10.2 scoreless innings in the tournament, setting a new tournament record. The old record was 10.1 innings held by former Maverick Mike Snapp in 2001 in this same ballpark.

Chuckie Platte (3-3) took the loss for LU after giving up one unearned run on two hits in two innings.
