June 2, 2006

Box Score | Quotes

AUSTIN, Texas - UT-Arlington second baseman Daniel Rieder went 3-for-5 and was a triple shy of the cycle, but in the end it was a total-team effort by Texas as the Longhorns handed the Mavs a 9-1 defeat Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in front of 4,933 fans at Disch-Falk Field.

The Horns (41-19) got on the board in the second inning as Carson Kainer beat out a chopper to third. Runners advanced to second and third as Bradley Suttle's sacrifice bunt was thrown into center field by UTA starter Kyle Gainley. Chaise Fuller delivered a sacrifice fly to left center and Chance Wheeless delivered an RBI double just inside the bag at first.

UTA (29-35) answered with a run of their own in the third inning as Rieder started the inning by yanking a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season.

UT pushed across three more runs in the fourth as a throwing error on an attempted double-play ball plated one run and Preston Clark followed with a two-run shot to left field.

Another run crossed the board for the Horns in the fifth as Drew Stubbs reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second. Cainer drove in the runner with a single back through the middle.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the home-half of the seventh as the Horns got RBI singles off the bats of Chaise Fuller and Wheeless.

UT got another run in the eighth as the second hit of the inning resulted in an RBI single from Hunter Harris.

Gainley (5-6) took the loss after giving up five runs, all earned, on five hits in four innings of work. He struck out four and walked one. Kenn Kasparek (5-2) picked up the victory as he allowed one run on eight hits over 7.1 innings. He walked two and struck out a career-high seven.

Robby Winn delivered a double into the gap in right center in top of the eighth inning to now hit safely in 41 of the last 45 games.

The Mavs will now play North Carolina State in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Disch-Falk Field. The game can be seen live on ESPNU.
