DALLAS, Texas - Despite three Mavs scoring in double digits UT Arlington women's basketball dropped a 97-66 decision to SMU in Dallas Saturday evening. Senior Maryann Abanobi led the charge with 15 points followed by freshman Tamara Simmons with 13.
Junior Candice Champion, who finished the night with a career-high 16 rebounds, sank a layup two minutes into the game to stop a 6-0 run by the Mustangs. However, with back-to-back buckets from beyond the arch from Jillian Samuels SMU took a ten-point advantage with 11:08 left in the half.
Over the next three minutes, sophomore Kiarra Shofner and Abanobi combined for 11-points to bring UTA within one (22-21).
SMU closed out the half with a 24-15 run to lead by ten (46-36) heading into the locker room.
The Mustangs came out strong scoring the first six points of the second half to lead 52-36. Simmons hit a layup in traffic followed by a tre with 15:12 on the clock to bring UTA within 11.
Five unanswered points from Abanobi brought the Mavs within nine with 12:18 left in the half. SMU countered with a 14-3 run for a 20-point advantage (71-51).
Over the final eight minutes, SMU outscored UTA 26-to-15 to secure the win 97-66.
UTA returns to action on Dec. 18 when it welcomes first-time opponent Marshall to Texas Hall for a 2 p.m. tip.
