Box Score
BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar scored four runs in the third inning and followed it up with two more runs in the fourth inning and that is all they would need as two pitchers combined to strikeout 11 Mavericks in handing UT Arlington an 11-3 defeat in the conference opener for both teams.
UTA (9-12, 0-1 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as Brock Wilson battled for a leadoff walk and Daniel Rieder doubled into the gap in right center. Matthew Otteman drove in the only run of the inning with a one-out RBI groundout to short.
The Cardinals (13-8, 1-0 SLC) bats came alive in the third inning as Travis Dunson and Erik Kanaby each blooped in singles before Collin DeLome delivered a two-run double to right center. Michael Ambort would follow with an RBI single through the right side and Jeff Vickers would later tuck an RBI double just inside the line in right field.
The Mavs got two runs back in the fourth inning as Mitch Putman singled to right field and David McLeod delivered a two-run shot to left field, the first of his career.
LU got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth as David Moore was hit by a pitch and Keith Towne walked. After a sacrifice bunt, Kanaby drove in both runners with a single up the middle.
The Cardinals added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as they loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a walk before Vickers drew a bases loaded base on balls and Moore later delivered a bloop single to left.
