CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The 2007 UT Arlington baseball season came to a painful end on Saturday as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, including scoring the winning run on a wild pitch, to hand the Mavericks a 5-4 loss at Chapman Field.
The Islanders (27-29, 12-18 SLC) used a pair of hits and a walk to load the bases with one out. UTA reliever was able to record a strikeout for the second out, but Jason Graham delivered a two-run single through the right side to tie the game. A wild pitch would follow, allowing the winning run to score from third.
UTA (13-40, 4-26 SLC) would get on the board in the first inning as Kyle Rudy delivered a single through the left side and scored on David Newby's double to left center. After a pair of fielder's choices put runners on the corners, Daniel Rieder delivered an RBI single to center field. The Mavs would push their third run of the inning across on a successful double steal.
The Mavs added another run in the second as Rudy delivered a two-out double to left field and scored on Newby's single to center field.
TAMUCC would push a run across in the seventh as a pair of base hits put runners on the corners and Ernie Olivares would deliver a sacrifice fly to left field.
An unearned run came across for the Islanders in the eighth as a leadoff walk came around to score on a fielding error with two outs.
Eamonn Donovan got the start for the Mavs and allowed just two hits and struck out four over 4.1 innings before leaving with an injury. Jeffrey Nollen came in and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits over 3.2 innings. Martin (0-2) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Emerson Trager (5-5) picked up the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Newby led the Mavs offense by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Rudy collected three hits and scored two runs.
