ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington collected a season-best 78 digs, and freshman Amanda Aguilera notched her second straight double-double with 13 kills and a season-high 18 digs in a 3-1 loss against Lamar on Thursday night at Texas Hall in Arlington. Lamar sophomore outside hitter Genevieve Gladle led all players with 21 kills, marking the most kills by a UT Arlington opposing player this season. The Mavericks fall to 4-13 on the season and to 0-3 in the Southland Conference. Lamar improves its overall record to 4-7 and to a perfect 2-0 in SLC play.
The Mavs and Lady Cardinals combined for 145 digs and 109 kills in the hard-fought contest. Aguilera continued to shine for the Mavericks, as the outside hitter from Pearland tallied double-figures in kills and digs by the second set.
"I think we played much better than we have over the course of the last few matches," Mavericks head coach Diane Seymour said. "We changed our practice mode, and I think that paid off in sets one and two because we came out fighting and scrapping. Obviously I think we had a mental let down in sets three and four."
Lamar took the 1-0 lead in the match with a come-from-behind win in the first set. The Mavs led 24-23 after Aguilera's fifth kill, but then surrendered three straight points to the Lady Cardinals, who benefited from two kills from Gladle and an ace from senior Ashley Todd to take the first set 26-24.
The Mavs received a spark off the bench from defensive specialist Katie Utecht. The 5-foot-5 sophomore from Fort Worth made her season debut a memorable one with a career-high 15 digs in the contest. Utecht's contributions were evident early with four digs in the first set and five in the second frame.
Aguilera's offensive firepower pushed the Mavericks into the lead for good in the second set when she tallied three straight kills to give UT Arlington a 17-13 lead. The Lady Cardinals would cut the Mavs' lead to one point (24-23) before Gladle was blocked by freshman Eld-hah Kaswatuka and freshman Emily Shearin to end the second set.
The Lady Cardinals dominated the third and fourth sets as they combined for 34 kills. Lamar never trailed in the third set taking a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 victory.
The fourth and final set had 13 ties and eight lead changes, and the Mavericks last lead came on the heels of three straight kills from freshman Christy Driscoll, who posted a season-high 15 kills in the match. After Driscoll's fourth kill in the fourth set, the Lady Cardinals ran off to a 25-17 victory after a 9-1 ended the match.
UT Arlington senior Ally Wade tallied 14 kills, and sophomore setter Raegan Daniel collected her team-leading fourth double-double of the season while tying her season-best 11 digs and adding 41 assists.
Lamar was led by Gladle (21 kills, 13 digs) and Todd (59 assists, five digs, two aces).
UT Arlington will remain on its home court on Saturday, Oct. 4, hosting Sam Houston State (5-12, 0-1) for a 4 p.m. SLC contest at Texas Hall.
