SAN MARCOS, Texas - UT Arlington women's basketball fell 63-59 to Texas State at Strahan Coliseum on Saturday. The loss drops the Mavericks to second place in the SLC West Division with a 7-2 conference record, while the Bobcats remain on top with an 8-1 league record.
Junior Candice Champion led the Mavs with 14 points off the bench, while fellow junior Erin Dixon led all players with 13 rebounds. UTA shot a season best from the free throw line, hitting 16-of-17 for a record 94 percent. The Mavs also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Bobcats 39 to 37.
UT Arlington and Texas State matched points early in the first half, but the back-to-back layups from senior Maryann Abanobi and sophomore Kiarra Shofner gave the Mavs a three-point edge with 9:57 on the clock.
At the 5:45 mark, Champion sank a layup to halt a 9-0 Bobcat run and freshman Tamara Simmons added a jumper to bring UTA within two (18-20).
The Mavericks closed out the first half on an 11-6 run to lead 29-26 at the break.
Joyce Ekworomadu came out in the second half to score ten straight points for the Bobcats to put them back on top 36-32, four minutes into the action.
Senior Tiffeny Riles hit a pair from the line followed by a fade away jumper from Dixon to cut the Bobcats lead to two (42-44) with 8:22 left in the game.
A layup from Marie Moser sparked a 15-4 run by the Bobcat during which they built up their largest lead of the game at 13-points (46-59).
In the final four minutes of the game, UTA used a 10-2 run to close the gap to within four, but would not get any closer.
UTA will be back at Texas Hall on Thursday when it welcomes SLC East Division leader Lamar to Arlington for a 7 p.m. showdown.
