
MAVERICKS SUFFER 65-60 LOSS TO LAMAR UNIVERSITY

Beaumont, Texas - With 21 seconds left to play in the game and down by two points, the Mavericks were unable to make key defensive stops which lead to their first conference loss of the season against Lamar University, 65-60.
The setback dropped UT Arlington to 7-8 on the season, 1-1 in league play while Lamar improved to 10-5, 1-1 in conference action.
Meghan Nelson finished with a team high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, including 1-of-3 from behind the arc and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.
A 50 percent shooting performance from behind the three-point line by the Lamar Cardinals in the first half found the Mavericks down 36-28 heading into the locker rooms.
The Mavs finished the first half shooting 39.3 percent from the field, 25 percent from the behind the arc and 71. 4 percent from the charity stripe.
UTA trailed the entire second half by at least three points until a fast break layup by Nelson brought the Mavericks within one point with 8:48 left to play. Nikki Williams put the Cardinals back on top following back-to-back three-pointers at the 7:59 mark.
Another layup by Nelson made it a three point game and a LaTosha Duffey three-pointer knotted the score at 57-57 with 5:25 left to play. The Mavericks defense was unable to contain Lamar's offense, as they connected on several key buckets in the final four minutes of the game.
For the game, UTA shot 35.9 percent from the field compared to Lamar's 39.3 percent from the floor.
Senior Erin Dixon collected her sixth double-double of the season with a 12-point, 14 rebound performance while Candice Champion scored 11 points.
Williams recorded a game high 22 points on 7-of-19 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from the behind the arc, and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
UTA returns to Texas Hall on Saturday, January 17 where they host UTSA at 4 p.m. for their second home conference game of the season.
