Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington women's tennis squad dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision in a non-conference match-up over No.42 Yale University on Tuesday, March 10.
"We are very proud of this group of girls and how much effort and determination they put in the singles today," said Assistant Head Women's Coach Younes Limam. "We came up a little bit short at the end, but we are definitely in the right path. We will remember the Yale match throughout the season as we use this loss as a motivational tool to win close matches against ranked teams. We will learn from it and move on."
"We look forward to playing another two good matches at home, so we just need to get ready and approach every match with a lot of enthusiasm," added Limam.
The Mavericks opened tennis action with doubles competition, falling in two of the three matches and headed into singles play down 1-0.
Klara Jagosova and Daiana Negreanu dropped an 8-2 decision against Vicky Brook and Lindsey Clark in the No. 1 position while Janet Kim and Jessica Rhee handed Maria Martinez-Romer and Nicola Matovicova an 8-3 loss in the No. 2 spot in the lineup.
Monica Hadvigerova and Katarina Mlcochova recorded the only doubles' win as they collecting an 8-7 victory over Lilian Nguyen and Sarah Lederhandler in the No. 3 position.
UTA fought hard in singles play, collecting three matches but fell short of the victory over the Bulldogs.
Kim handed Hadvigerova a 6-3, 6-3 setback in the No. 1 spot while Rhee notched a three-set win over Jagosova, with scores of 5-7, 6-4 and 6-3 in the No. 2 position.
Negreanu notched a hard-fought three-set victory over Clark, with scores of 6-2, 2-6 and 6-3 in the No. 3 spot while Brook recorded a 6-2, 5-7 and 6-1 win against Mlcochova in the No. 4 position in the rotation.
Martinez-Romer collected a 1-6, 6-3, and 6-4 win over Lederhandler in the No. 5 spot while Matovicova finished with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nguyen in the No. 6 position.
The loss dropped the Mavericks to 7-3 overall while Yale improved to 7-4. UTA looks to rebound from the setback when they host New Mexico State on Friday, Mar. 13 at the UTA Tennis Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
