Natchitoches, La. - The UT Arlington women's tennis squad improved to 2-0 in conference action after recording a 6-1 victory over Northwestern State on Sunday, March 1 at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex in Natchitoches, La. The Mavericks improved to 4-2 overall and ended the Lady Demon's five-match win streak.
"I was very proud of the girls," said Assistant Women's Tennis Coach Younes Liman. "They played with a lot of heart and determination and it made the difference in singles. We lost the doubles' point but they didn't let that affect them and went into the singles and took care of business."
UTA opened tennis action with doubles' competition, falling in two matches and losing the doubles point.
Klara Jagosova and Nikola Matovivoa dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to Olga Bazhanova and Dragana Colic in the No. 1 position while Daiana Negreanu and Maria Martinez-Romer suffered an 8-2 loss against Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz at the No. 2 spot.
Monika Hadvigerova and Katarina Mlcochova were the only doubles' team to record a win for the Mavs. The duo handed Adna Curukovic and Suncica Strkic an 8-5 setback playing in the No. 3 position.
After losing the doubles' point, UT Arlington battled their way in singles' action, capturing all six matches.
Hadvigerova improved to 6-1 in singles' play, after posting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Curukovic in the No. 1 position while Negreanu notched a three-set win over Bazhanova by scores of 2-6, 7-6 and 10-6 in the No. 2 spot.
"Monika is playing great and has been improving in every match," said Liman. "She is very confident, has won a lot of matches in the last three weeks, and is playing really good."
Jagosova collected a 6-3, 6-1 win over Lange in the No. 3 position while Mlcochova recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Schulz in the No. 4 spot in the lineup.
Martinez-Romer handed Colic a 6-4, 6-0 setback in the No. 5 position while Matovivoa notched a 6-1, 6-4 win over Daniela Posada in the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
The Mavericks return to the friendly confines of the UTA Tennis Center where they host six consecutive home matches. UTA opens their six-game home stand with a meeting with McNeese State on Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. followed by Lamar University on Sunday, March 8 at 10 a.m.
"We host McNeese State and Lamar at home this week," said Liman. "It will be good for us to play on our home court and hopefully we can get a crowd and continue to play hard.
