ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington had its seven-game Southland Conference win streak snapped Friday night with an 8-6 loss to Southeastern Louisiana at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington. The Mavericks (15-13, 8-5) rallied late scoring five of their six runs in the seventh and ninth innings, but it wasn't enough as the Lions (18-9, 9-4) remain in a tie for first place in the SLC with Texas State, who also won Friday night.
Despite five Mavericks with multi-hit games, Southeastern starting pitcher Ryan Boudreaux battled against UT Arlington's offensive attack while striking out four and earning his fourth win of the season. UT Arlington outhit Southeastern, 13-9, but committed three errors compared to the Lions' one error.
UT Arlington starter Andy Sauter suffered his first loss since the first weekend of conference play while allowing seven runs and seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Lions grabbed the lead with a run in the first and added a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to hold a 5-0 lead.
The Mavericks, meanwhile, posted four hits in the opening five innings but left three runners stranded in scoring position. UT Arlington notched its first run of the game on senior Matt Otteman's team-leading fifth home run of the season. Otteman now has at least one hit in 27 of the Mavericks 28 games this season.
The Lions chipped in three runs in the seventh inning (two earned) off Sauter and relief pitcher Ryan Martin to take an 8-1 advantage.
UT Arlington started its comeback in the seventh scoring two runs on Jay Pitschka's single to right-center field that scored Chad Comer and also plated Evan Raley, who scored on center fielder Cass Hargis' error to cut the Lions' lead to 8-3.
The Mavericks final effort came in the ninth with four hits, including an infield single by Preston McCoy, a single to right field by Evan Raley and a run-scoring double down the right-field line by Pitschka, which lead to Southeastern brining in closer Chris Franklin with two outs.
Franklin first allowed a two-run bloop single down the left-field line by Tim Steggall, which scored Pitschka and Raley, before ending the game on Michael Choice's line drive to center field. Franklin picked up his SLC leading seventh save of the season.
Pitschka and Steggall each went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, Andrew Kainer extended his hit streak to 15 games going 2-for-4 while McCoy (2-for-3) and Raley (2-for-4, 2 runs) each had two hits apiece.
The Lions were led by Hargis (3-for-5, 2 runs) and left fielder Brandon Street (2-for-5, 3 RBI).
The UT Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana will continued their conference series on Saturday at 2 p.m., with right-handed pitcher Nathan Long (3-1) scheduled to start for the Mavericks and right-handed pitcher Brandon Efferson listed as the probable starter for the Lions.
