Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington Mavericks (1-3) did not disappoint the 2,116 Oklahoma State (4-0) fans in the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena and neither did senior Tamara Simmons. Simmons was nearly perfect as she led the Mavs with a career-high 30 points Monday night in an 82-52 loss.
Simmons was the lone Maverick to finish in double-digit scoring. She shot 12-of-14 from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc and 1-of-1 from the charity stripe. It was the third time Simmons led UTA in scoring and was the third 20-plus performance in the Mavs last four games.
The Mavericks intensity in the opening minutes of the first half was strong as it took OSU until the 17:18 minute mark to score a bucket. UTA's only lead in the game came at the 16:17 mark following a jumper in the paint by Simmons.
Oklahoma State went on to take a six point lead but the Mavericks came within one at 10-9 with 12:34 left to play in the first half following a fast break layup by Shalyn Martin.
That was the closest UT Arlington would come to the Cowgirls the rest of the game. OSU would take their largest lead of the first half of 11 points but UTA managed to head into halftime down 39-29.
Simmons opened the second half right where she left off, hitting back-to-back buckets but no one else on the squad added any offensive support.
The senior from Arlington, Texas did all she could to lead her team to a victory, scoring 13 second half points but it wasn't enough to stop a bigger OSU squad.
One of the biggest threats the Cowgirls posed was their inside game which dominated the boards by a 59-31 margin.
Four OSU players finished in double-figures, with Toni Young leading the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mavs finished the game shooting 35.1 percent from the field to the Cowgirls 38.3 percent.
UT Arlington returns to Arlington for a four game home stand beginning with Arkansas State on Wednesday, November 24 at 7 p.m.
