Mavs close out day one at Texas Invite

Arlington, Texas - The UT Arlington men's tennis team wrapped up day one at the Texas Invitational with two Mavericks advancing to the singles quarterfinals.

In the opening singles round, Yauheni Yakauleu dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Julian Bley. Yakauleu moved to the consolation bracket where he notched a 7-6, 3-6 and 1-0 win over Florida's Andrew Butz. The sophomore advances to the quarterfinals where he takes on OU's Tsvetan Mihov tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Junior Jason Lateko had a great day in singles action, going 2-0 and advancing to the quarterfinals. Lateko earned a huge win over nationally ranked opponent Austin Klores (1) of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by scores of 7-6, 3-6 and 6-4. He then followed with another hard fought win over Marquette's Drake Kakar, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Lateko looks to stay undefeated tomorrow when he takes on Jacob Strauss of OU at 10:15 a.m.

If Lateko earns the quarterfinal win, he may face his teammatevErik Hjertonsson in the semifinals depending on the outcome of his match.

Hjertonsson also went undefeated in day one and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the round of 32, the freshman won a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Jannick Junger of UTSA then followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Daniel Brown of Texas A&M.

David Subirats recorded a hard fought 6-7, 6-4 and 6-0 win over Kayvon Karimi of TAMU but lost a tough 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2 decision to OU's John Warden.

Freshman Nicolas Moreno dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to nationally ranked opponent Otavio Perim (3) of Marquette. Now in the consolation bracket, Moreno recorded a 6-3, 7-5 win over UTSA's Sharig Khan and advanced to the quarterfinals with a second round bye. Moreno faces Alex Hilliard of Texas tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

Freshman Lucas Leppin notched a 6-0, 6-2 win over UTSA's Oliver Breiniger but suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss in the round of 16 to nationally ranked opponent John Lewis (2) of TAMU.

In doubles action, Subirats and Yakauleu lost an 8-3 decision to Alex Hilliard and Sudanwa Sitaram of Texas.

Duo Hjertonsson and Lateko suffered an 8-3 loss to Chris Camillone and Vasko Miladenov of Texas.

Leppin and Moreno dropped an 8-1 decision to nationally ranked team Alexis Klegou and Austin Klores of TAMU.

Tennis action continues tomorrow.
