Arlington, Texas - Tamara Simmons scored 22 and four other Mavericks scored in double figures as UT Arlington took care of Sam Houston State 87-76 Saturday afternoon in Texas Hall.
Simmons, junior guard, finished 8-of-11 from the floor including 5-of-6 from three. The Mavericks as a team shot 7-of-13 from three. Senior guard Meghan Nelson and junior forward Shalyn Martin each complemented Simmons with 17 points each.
Martin also collected 14 rebounds and blocked three shots. The Mavericks as a team outrebounded the Bearkats 55-41. UTA also held Sam Houston State to 38 percent shooting from the field.
The Mavericks were in control the majority of the game, posting a 45-36 first half lead and keeping the Bearkats at bay throughout the second half.
Other Mavs in double figures were freshman forward Veronica Mergerson with 12 and senior guard Kiarra Shofner with 10. Shofner was perfect from the field, 4-of-4 and 2-of-2 from behind the thee point line.
Next up for UTA is Nicholls State in Thibodeaux, Louis., on Wednesday night. It is the last road game of the year for UTA.
